The Ultimate Guide to Scissor Lift

Nov. 08, 2022

How to choose the right scissor lift to bring maximum benefit from the equipment and how to make the purchase as cost effective as possible - lifting equipment expert Vladislav shares his advice.

Stage 1: Defining the task for which the scissor lift will be used

At this stage it is necessary to decide on the specific use and needs of the equipment. As there are many variants and models of lifts, then a clear understanding of their tasks and functions will enable you to choose the most suitable model.

For example, the purpose of a lift might sound something like, "A lift designed to unload pallets of goods from the side of a car onto a 2 metre high ramp."

Stage 2: Determining the height of ascent/descent

Generally, scissor lifts are recommended for lifting up to a height of 5m (although there are exceptions). The lifting height of a particular model depends directly on the size of the platform that will be used.

Stage 3: Determining the size of the platform

For this purpose, it is sufficient to analyse the dimensions of the goods that are planned to be lifted on the platform. But you shouldn't forget a small "size inventory" either.

Stage 4: Determining the required lifting capacity

By analogy with the size of the platform, it is necessary to predict the weight that will be raised/lowered. Based on this parameter, install the appropriate hydraulic cylinders and stations.

Phase 5: Preparation of the installation site and power supply

An important aspect when installing a scissor lift is the preparation of the pit and the future installation site. An adequately prepared site is a guarantee of quality and reliable operation of the equipment.

The best solution is to provide the manager with photographs and floor plans of the installation site. Alternatively, take accurate measurements of the installation site/invite a competent specialist.

After making the necessary design calculations, a reference range for preparing the pit will be formed and provided.

Stage 6: Selection of options

In the basic configuration, the lift is equipped with everything needed to work in full comfort. However, it is not uncommon that, due to operational specifics, the customer requires additional options: additional fencing, light/audible alarms, additional safety systems, etc.

The most advantageous are cases where future options will be incorporated immediately, during the design phase.

Phase 7: Service

Any complex mechanism requires timely and high quality maintenance. This is an important aspect and is the key to long-term trouble-free operation. Scissor lifts are no exception.

We strongly recommend that you decide on a maintenance method for your lift. If possible, choose between the manufacturing plant (which will allow for an extended basic warranty), a competent third party organisation and our own service.

Conclusion

By following these simple suggestions, choosing a quality scissor lift will not be difficult. If you have any further questions, you can always contact us and get full expert support.
